How to Read a Tri-Bureau Credit Report: Equifax, Experian, TransUnion

Your credit report is a dense, confusing document — but it doesn't have to be. Learn to decode every section, spot errors instantly, and understand what each tradeline is telling lenders.

Pulling your tri-bureau credit report for the first time is overwhelming. Each bureau's report has a different format, different codes, and different ways of presenting the same information. But once you understand the structure, a credit report becomes the single most valuable diagnostic tool in your financial toolkit.

Every credit report is divided into four main sections. Personal Information contains your name, aliases, current and previous addresses, and employers. Public Records lists bankruptcies, tax liens, and civil judgments. Accounts (tradelines) is the main event — every credit account you've ever had, with payment history grids spanning 24 months. Inquiries show who has pulled your credit and when.

The payment history grid uses codes: OK (paid as agreed), 30/60/90/120 (days late), CO (charge-off), and CLS (closed). A string of OKs tells lenders you're reliable. Hard inquiries stay for 2 years; soft inquiries don't affect your score.

The most common report errors to look for are accounts that don't belong to you, incorrect payment statuses, incorrect balances affecting utilization, duplicate accounts, re-aged accounts, and closed accounts still showing as open. Each is legally disputable under the FCRA.
