Business Credit Building 101: Separating Personal and Business Credit
Your business deserves its own credit identity. Learn how to establish business credit separate from your personal credit and build scores with all three business credit bureaus.
Most small business owners fund their ventures entirely through personal credit — personal credit cards, personal loans, personal guarantees. This is the most dangerous financial mistake an entrepreneur can make. If the business fails, your personal credit is destroyed. If it succeeds, you're capped at personal limits.
The first step is establishing your business as a legal entity: form an LLC or S-Corp, obtain an EIN from the IRS, open a dedicated business bank account, get a business phone line listed in 411, and set up a professional business address.
The second step is registering with business credit bureaus. Apply for a D-U-N-S Number from Dun & Bradstreet (free, takes 30 days). Once you have your DUNS, start building credit with vendors who report to D&B.
The third step is establishing vendor credit lines. Target net-30 vendors — Uline, Quill, Grainger — order products you need, pay within terms. After 3-5 vendor accounts reporting for 90+ days, you'll have an established PAYDEX score, opening doors to store credit cards and eventually business credit cards.
